Our story

MAST PLUS builds on a simple but critical insight: while the tourism sector increasingly recognises the importance of sustainability, turning ambition into everyday practice remains a challenge—especially for accommodation SMEs operating in complex and resource-constrained environments.

The story began with the initial MAST project, where partners came together to understand these barriers and translate the ISO 21401:2018 standard into something practical. The result was the MAST Sustainable Solution—a combination of a Sustainability Protocol, a Self-Assessment Tool and an Implementation Manual—designed to guide SMEs step by step across environmental, social and economic dimensions.

With MAST PLUS, this journey enters a new phase. The consortium has evolved to bring together research institutions, technical experts, tourism organisations and policy actors, all working towards a shared goal: to test, refine and make these tools truly work in real-life conditions. Across diverse Mediterranean territories, the solution is applied, challenged and improved, ensuring it responds to different regulatory systems, market realities and local ecosystems.

At the same time, the project aligns with broader European priorities, contributing to the EU Green Deal through concrete action—supporting climate targets, circular economy practices and the preservation of natural and social environments. By enabling continuous improvement and structured implementation, the MAST approach helps accommodation providers move beyond compliance and towards long-term sustainability.

Through this collective effort, MAST Plus transforms a technical framework into a living system—one that is tested, shared and prepared for wider uptake, empowering tourism stakeholders and supporting a more resilient and responsible Mediterranean tourism sector for the future.
