MAking Sustainable Tourism possible project was featured at the 18th Annual EMRBI Conference: Exploring New Horizons in Business and Management, held in Porto, Portugal, from 10 to 12 September 2025.
As part of the conference programme, the paper “Sustainability in the Italian Hospitality Industry: Challenges and Opportunities” was presented.
The paper, developed within Work Package 1 (WP1) of the MAST project, explores the state of sustainability in the Italian hospitality sector through qualitative interviews with industry representatives. The findings highlight a varied landscape:
-
High-end hotels are investing in advanced technologies to achieve sustainability goals.
-
Smaller accommodation providers tend to focus on building strong community connections and local initiatives.
-
Persistent barriers, including high costs and bureaucratic complexity, continue to hinder wider adoption of sustainable practices.
These insights provide a valuable knowledge base for the next stages of the MAST project, particularly in the development of practical tools and protocols that will support the transition of the hospitality sector towards greater sustainability.
The participation in EMRBI represents an important opportunity for MAST to share research progress with the wider academic and professional community, and to foster dialogue on the future of sustainable tourism across Europe and beyond.
