MAST Final Video: A Mediterranean Journey Toward Sustainable Tourism

As the MAST project (MAking Sustainable Tourism possible) approaches its conclusion, we are proud to present our second and final promotional video — a reflection of the journey we have undertaken across the Mediterranean.

Over the past two years, the MAST consortium has joined forces to research, analyse, and design a shared pathway for sustainable tourism in the accommodation sector. The result is a practical framework built on real challenges faced by SMEs in five Mediterranean countries.

Through the development of the MAST Sustainability Protocol and the free Online Self-Assessment Tool, the project has empowered accommodation providers to move beyond theory and take concrete action. Rooted in the internationally recognised ISO 21401:2018 standard, these tools translate sustainability from a regulatory requirement into a strategic opportunity.

Tourism accounts for approximately 8% of global CO₂ emissions, and Mediterranean destinations face increasing environmental and social pressures. MAST has demonstrated that change is not only urgent — it is achievable. By addressing high costs, limited expertise, and complex regulatory frameworks, the project has created solutions designed with and for SMEs, ensuring direct and measurable impact.

To date, MAST has directly engaged over 1,000 stakeholders, raising awareness among hotel managers and tourism professionals about the value of structured sustainability management. The tools developed through MAST enable businesses to operate more efficiently, strengthen community ties, safeguard natural and cultural heritage, and reduce economic leakage.
